How to Incorporate Collagen into Your Routine

Did you know that collagen makes up about 75% of your skin’s elasticity? Did you also know that your body’s natural collagen production will begin to diminish as early as your mid-twenties?

Cool, but like, what does that mean for me?

It means you’re gonna stop looking cute if you don’t figure something out, Henny! **insert your favorite Jonathan Van Ness gif here**

I don’t know if you’ve picked up on this yet, but I’m big on skincare. May I direct you to “BEAUTY,” aka, the most loved section, of my blog? Anyway, between comically oversized sunglasses and religious SPF application to overpriced serums and more face masks than a normal human would ever realistically go through, skincare has quickly become a huge part of my day to day routine.

Unfortunately, try as I might, I’ve yet to discover a way to fight time. Getting old sucks for everyone regardless of wealth, status, or skincare regimen.

One thing that I have found to help, is a good collagen supplement. In fact, I’ve found a few and I’ve noticed that they work best in conjunction with one another.

The first product is the Healthy Life Creations Collagen Peptides Powder, which is a marine-based collagen powder that I purchase at the farmers market, but you can also find online.

While not the easiest product to work into my diet, I’ve found it to be the most beneficial as it also contains a good amount of protein and amino acids. This product is totally flavorless, yes actually flavorless, and can be mixed into hot and cold beverages alike. My favorite way to use it is to mix two hearty scoops into my breakfast shakes.

The next product that I really enjoy, and please keep in mind that I’m not nearly organized enough to put these in any kind of order that makes sense, is the collagen line from Algenist, specifically, the GENIUS Liquid Collagen and the GENIUS Liquid Collagen Lip.

I apply this stuff like it’s my job. I use the GENIUS Liquid Collagen right before moisturizer both morning and night, and then I’ll apply the GENIUS Liquid Collagen Lip before I apply my Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask before bed. Both products made my skin look plump and juicy, which is something that I crave from all products now that my body has begun to betray me.

Lastly, let’s move onto face masks. Now, I don’t know that these necessarily do any more than applying a serum to your skin, but as Tati always says, more is more so we do it anyway.

For a long time, I wasn’t into sheet masks; I much preferred clay and creams, and was way too stubborn to invest my time into anything that didn’t immediately wow me. Then work started making me fly around the country every few months and sheet masks became my best friend.

Not only are sheet masks significantly more convenient to travel with, but my face feels more moisturized than when I use other types of masks, and rehydration is my top priority after flying. Although I don’t have a favorite brand for collagen sheet masks, a few that I have repurchased are the DERMAL 16 Combo Pack B from Amazon and the Lapcos Variety Pack which I usually try to wait to repurchase from Costco when it’s in stock to save a few dollars.

My final tip is to combine all your efforts with a collagen supplement in pill form. This may seem like overkill, but we’re all human and while I might forget a step in my routine from time to time, maintaining a youthful level of collagen while I still can is important to me which is why I go to such great lengths to ensure that I’m getting it into my body at all costs.

Let me know in the comments section if you’ve worked collagen into your wellness regimen. Do you have a specific brand you love? I’d love to check it out!
