The Never-Ending Stress of Washing Your Hair

There is nothing in this world that pains me more than washing my hair. I absolutely hate it with everything I have inside me. I hate washing my hair so much that I’ve been known to go more than a few days too long without washing it.

As a former ridiculously long hair haver, washing my hair always gives me mild PTSD. The washing and the drying and then the styling and the re-styling; hours upon hours and it just never ends. At this rate I’m going to die having spent months if not years of my life with a stupid blowdryer in my hand.

Last year, on April 20, 2018, I finally made the big-girl decision to chop it all off and donate my locks to Children with Hair Loss. Let me be clear that when I say “all,” I mean the minimum requirement because I had lived 24 long years with hair down to my butt and a constant string of threats from my mother regarding the consequences of cutting my hair.

Once I got used to my new do, my life changed for the better. No more were the days of spending hours in the bathroom trying to get my hair to cooperate. Now we were at a not-so-enjoyable 45 minutes or so. But hey, small improvement is still improvement, right?

Anywho, after nearly a year of this new carefree lifestyle, I’ve begun to hate the process once more, which thrust me into my most recent journey to discover the best dry shampoo.

I searched high and low, explored drugstore and luxury brands alike, tested endless samples, bought Sephora favorites, and more. After months and months of trials, ladies and gentlemen, I think I finally have a winner.

The Drybar Detox Dry Shampoo for Brunettes has been a true game changer in my overall happiness as it saves me countless hours each week. This dry shampoo gives me such incredible oil absorption that I could probably go the rest of my life without having to get my hair wet, and I totally would too if I thought I could do that and still have a social life.

Micro-fine Rice Powders absorb excess oils and odors. As they absorb, they become translucent to naturally blend with all hair colors and expand to provide lift in the roots. As an added bonus, this product is also formulated without parabens, sulfates, or phthalates and is cruelty free.

SOLD. SOLD. SOLD. Clean looking hair plus volume? Yes, please! This product retails for $23, which is a little pricey if you’re blowing through it the way I do, but rest assured because you can purchase them on sale once in a while at Ulta.

A few runners up who deserve an honorable mention are the Batiste Dry Shampoo in Divine Dark, Living Proof PHD Dry Shampoo, and the Bumble and Bumble Pret-a-Powder. While all three of these products had great attributes as well, but Drybar was a combination of my favorites qualities from each. Batiste had the great brunette coverage, but has weaker oil absorption than Drybar. Living Proof was incredible as well, but doesn’t come in a brunette version and I can’t stand the white streaks it leaves if you don’t spend a significant amount of time blending. I’ll probably continue to use the Bumble and Bumble dry shampoo as it was the most convenient to travel with. This product doesn’t come in a brunette version either, but I found that if you apply the night before at bedtime, and you’ll wake up with fresher looking hair without the harsh white cast from the powder.
