Coconut oil is one of those magical products that are super trendy right now.
Cooking dinner? Coconut oil. Dry skin? Coconut oil. Bad breath? Coconut oil. Need your taxes done? Coconut oil. Get hit by a car? Coconut oil.
I mean sure, it might not help if you actually need your taxes done or get hit by a car, but it’s still a versatile product to keep around your house. With so many cool ways to use coconut oil, this one seems like a no-brainer. Here’s a quick list of my favorite ways to incorporate coconut oil into my daily routine.
1. Supplement Your Favorite Body Lotion
I love lotion. It’s so luxurious, they always smell so yummy, and there are few times where I feel better than directly after I’ve showered and slathered myself in a hefty layer of a new bottle.
However, nothing is worse than trying a new lotion that you’re so excited about only to find that it does very little to actually hydrate your skin. I’m looking at you Bath and Body Works Hand Lotions! Don’t get me wrong, I still have five or six of these guys floating around my purses because they smell so delicious, but my goodness, I have to reapply every 15 minutes to reap any benefits from this lotion. And unfortunately, they’re not the only culprit.
While I’d never suggest removing lotion from your regimen entirely, more is more and mixing your favorite lotion with a glob of coconut oil can make any lotion hydrate tired skin more deeply. It’s also been suggested that coconut oil may help reduce inflammation and acne due to its antibacterial properties.
Pro Tip: If you’re like me and the skin around my fingernails cracks ALL THE TIME, drenching them (and I mean drenching them) in coconut oil right before bed and you’ll wake up with significantly improved skin.
2. Remove Your Makeup Gently
I don’t know about you, but I HATE removing my makeup. It’s right up there with washing my hair. It’s just one of those things that I don’t enjoy doing. Obviously, you have to take off your makeup and wash your face every day. You just do, it’s beauty law. But I sure don’t have to like it.
Although I love my Clinique Take the Day Off Makeup Removing Line, that stuff adds up with the amount of waterproof mascara that I wear. Using some coconut oil will take care of the job just as well for a fraction of the price.
3. Enhance Your Bath
There’s nothing worse than getting out of a nice bubble bath all pruney and dry because nothing in the water did anything to hydrate your skin. But fear not, because soaking in coconut oil will leave your skin silky smooth. You can also check out my past blog for more tips on how to create the most luxurious bubble bath.
4. Swap Out Unhealthy Oils in the Kitchen
Coconut oil is one of the healthiest oils to cook with due to its high melting temperature which locks in nutrients. Coconut has tons of healthy fats which are said to help boost fat burning and energy. As an added bonus, it also gives all your food a new and delicious nutty element.
5. Soften Your Skin
I may have said this once or twice before, but I’m pretty into skin care. Silly or vain as it may sound, having clear skin is pretty high up on my list of priorities, and this goes far past my face.
While I do have fairly dry skin, I still do my best to exfoliate as often as my skin will allow, which is typically a few times per week. On my face, I quite enjoy the Squeaky-Clean Scrub from The Body Shop which I normally pick up from UIta when it’s on sale. For my body, however, I enjoy making my own natural sugar scrub to know exactly what I’m putting on my body.
For this, I use 2:1 ratio of sugar and coconut, respectively, mix thoroughly, and add about 15 drops of my favorite essential oil. If you store in a sealed jar, it’ll last quite a while. They also make great gifts!
6. Melt Chocolate with Ease
This is one of my favorite ways to use coconut oil, because obviously, who doesn’t love chocolate? Take your chocolate chips, the more the merrier in my opinion, add a hefty tablespoon of coconut oil, and pop it in the microwave, stirring occasionally until melted. Then, take sliced fruit, cake, chips, or whatever floats your boat, dunk them in the chocolate and set until hardened.
Pro Tip: This trick works with nut butter as well!
7. Hydrate Your Hair
I don’t love my hair. I do the bare minimum to look like a real life person every day, but I’d almost rather chop my arm off than have to deal with my hair every day. This means that I use an overwhelming amount of dry shampoo on a daily basis, which leaves the tips of my hair sad and dry. To combat this, I’ll melt a few cups of coconut oil and lather it up in my hair. I’ll then twist my hair up into a towel and cover with a shower cap overnight. When I wake up, my hair is shiny and soft, just like the pretty and carefree girls on the shampoo commercials.
Clearly I love coconut oil. I truly believe in it’s magical unicorn powers to solve all the world’s problems. My favorite coconut oil is the Trader Joe’s Organic Virgin Coconut Oil, but it is on the pricey side for the amount that you get, so I’ll also compromise for the Walmart version which is a fraction of the cost.
