Let me preface this entire thing by saying that I don’t do a lot of face makeup; I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve put foundation on my face this year and I wouldn’t even have to use all my fingers. If I’m feeling a little extra, I’ll throw on some cream products and a powder or two, but nothing that really needs an abundance of priming action.
After hearing endless good things about the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer, I decided to give it a shot for myself, so for the sake of this review, I busted out my favorite foundation (my only foundation) and was pleasantly surprised by the results at the end of the day.
Upon application, the primer smelled like aloe vera and was quite tacky to the touch, but the products I placed over it dried down fine and I didn’t notice any further smell or stickiness.
This primer is made with “hemp-derived cannabis seed extract [which] hydrates to plump and smooth” your skin while “a shot of blue agave extract forms an invisible layer to grip makeup for all-day hold.” Other featured ingredients include aloe water, hyaluronic acid, and vitamin B. This formula is also silicone-free, oil-free, cruelty-free, paraben-free, and vegan.
I don’t do wear tests often, because I truly don’t mind having to reapply once in awhile throughout the day; but when I do, I try to give the products at least a full work day’s worth of wear time before making my decision.
So there I was, nine hours and an entire day with my mom later, and things were looking better than expected. Now, I will mention that this primer will not do anything to blur my pores or make my skin look particularly hydrated. At the end of the day, your face will still look like a face and there’s really not much you can do about it.
HOWEVER, I was pleasantly surprised to find that there was not a bare patch of skin on my face; every inch was still perfectly pigmented with everything I had caked on nine hours prior. This is pretty rare for me because it was a toasty morning at the farmer’s market and I tend to touch my face a lot.
All in all, if you’re on the hunt for a primer that will simply elongate your makeup wear time, the Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Primer is a fantastic option. Will this become your new all-in-one holy grail primer? Probably not. But if you pair this with a pore filling primer like the Smashbox Photo Finish Pore Minimizing Primer (my all time favorite) and top off your look with a hydrating setting spray like the Pixi Hydrating Milky Mist, you just might find your new favorite combination.
